Default Still can't believe it!

Wow - what a rush!!!!! I still cannot believe I actually caught a legal striper. But, before I get into that - I want to say thank you to everyone involved with putting on the tournament. Thanks to Sam, Terry and Bev for hosting the tournament and a special thanks to Sam and Terry who stayed up all night. I hate to admit that I went home. Oliver and Uriah stayed all night and looked like frozen popsicles by the time I got back in the a.m. They weren't too happy when I showed up without coffee. What was I thinking??? But Carrie and her folks saved the day - hot cocoa and donuts. That was great.

Also, a huge “thank you” to Phil for getting the bait, although, as Coop said, the crabs were having a holiday. I just wish they had passed the info about the feast onto the stripers. With 45 people fishing, it is hard to believe that only eight keepers were caught!

I fished with Oliver and his buddy, Uriah. Oliver made sure to bring lots of firewood, so we had a nice warm fire throughout the entire event. Uriah was great about keeping that fire going and then some more of Oliver's friends showed up with more wood. Fortunately Oliver's friend Chris is from Florida and can't stand the cold - so before I left on Saturday night - we had a virtual bon fire going. I don't think I would have been able to stay except for that.

Now to the fish. You will be upset to learn that I thought I was reeling in a skate. Oliver had some trouble with one of his reels soon after we all got our lines in the water, so he wasn't in the best of humor. Being “Oma,” I figured he would feel better with a nice hot breakfast. I was busy doing that when he shouted for me to check my rod. I didn't see much action on the rod but knew I had something on the line once I got the sputnik loose. I hollered back to Oliver and Uriah letting them know that it was just a skate, so they weren't paying attention. I didn't know it was a striper until it hit the wash. You'll have to get the rest of the story from Oliver, because I was way too excited to know what was going on. I have to say that I have Phil to thank for my being able to get that fish in. During the Red Drum tourney Phil had a huge ray on his line, and I watched how he reeled only when a big wave was coming. I know Oliver had told me that many times, but it didn't click until that day I watched Phil bring in that ray. I had also read an article a while back about how a beginner will use a reel like a winch and how bad that is - so I did know to use my rod to pull in and only reel in the line when it was slack. Other than that - I think it is a miracle I landed that fish. I just wish I could have watched Critter Gitter land that monster. I can't wait to see those photos. My congratulations to you, Dave and to Dan for your 2nd place fish. I never imagined that I had a chance after I got the news of your catch.

Each time I get to fish on Assateague, I meet new and interesting people. We were fishing next to Sam’s father this time around. It was certainly nice to meet you, Bud. I hope Oliver and I will get to fish with you again soon! I missed seeing some of the other friends we’ve been fishing with over the past few months. When we got word of your catch, Scott, I breathed a sigh of relief. I guess that means the “stink” is gone!

Now I can’t wait to get back to the beach to see if I can catch another striper – a bigger one!

Great job to all who fished the torney. Looks like it was chilly out there, wish I could have been there with you all. However next Sat. is whitetail deer season in MD. and have to switch from fishing to hunting now. But I'll be back to AI. in the early spring !

Talking

Congrats to NancY!!!!!! A very nice fish and your first one at that.

Congrats to Dave!!!! That fish is a horse!

Congrats to the the other winner!!!! Sorry I haven't met you yet.

Here is my story.

I started hauling my gear out at 3:30 Saturday morning, by 5:15 I was fishing. The crabs were NASTY! I got a lot of casting practice. Scott talked to me about the float thing and I bought some from Harbor Tackle. They worked at night, but I got into some bluefish and they were biting me off. I ran out of floats first thing Sunday morning. Next time I will put my freshwater experience to work and be able to rig the floats right. I didn't have what I needed this time. From there on it was chucking heads only. I threw A LOT of heads Sunday. Running 3 rods and rebaiting every 15 minutes.

You guys ever seen anyone use a beach umbrella in November? It was the best idea I have had for a long time! It got a little chilly out there Saturday night with that bit of a breeze so I set that umbrella up slanted and real low to the ground and tied it to a cooler so it wouldn't blow away. Put another couple of coolers on the sides and had a little windbreak there. With my chair under the umbrella I had a nice little spot to sit and still pay attention to my rods. I was watching Olivers fire all night. Holy smokes!!!! How much wood did you guys have? Thanks for the ride in Oliver.

First time I ever fished for 34 hours straight!!! Everyone in my family thinks I am nuts.

So I ended up with one rockfish, a bunch of those biting bluefish, skates, and a mess of either smooth or spiney dogfish.

Thanks to Sam for all the work putting this on!
Thanks to Harbor Tackle for being involved in this also! The best tackle shop on the shore if you ask me.
Thanks to all the guys that have offered me rides!

Whenever the next event is count me in! I will be there.

I didn't have any rockfish hit the floats either. But they sure worked like a charm! With so few rockfish around I would try it again. Did the rockfish see the float and not hit or were there no rockfish around?

I am betting that the float idea would be not as good during the day but a much better deal to try at night. Great idea!!!

The only rockfish I caught was on a head. Don't know how the crabs missed that one.

First I would to thank Sam,Terry, and Bev for their hard work and dedication towards the tounament. Great job guys!! Second I would like to congradulate Dave,Dan,Nancy,Steve,Phil,Coop,Roger, and Chris for their catches. I fished with Herb and Coop and we fished our off. I didn't catch any fish but I still had a great time. We fished all the way through and I can remember as tired as I was at 2:45 on Sunday knowing this was my last cast of the day I still didn't want to give up. But I will be back and I will catch myself a striper. The sunset on Sat. evening was incredible. Seeing the red skies over the dunes was a pleasant site. Sat. night was a little cold...did alot of running in place because we didn't have a fire...was happy to see the sun on Sunday morning. Coop and Herb, it was a pleasure fishing with ya and look forward to fishing again. Sam,Terry,Bev thanks again and look forward to next year.

Nice to meet you too, Tom. It was a chilly night for all of us who stayed out.

While on that subject, Phil (esoxangler) stayed outside the WHOLE tournament. He walked over the dunes from the parking lot with his gear and fished the entire tournament.

I don't know about you guys, but I just about froze to death and I had a vehicle with heat and a fire to warm up to... Not to mention 14 layers of clothing. Kudos to Phil... You are one tough guy staying out there that long and at the coldest point, you knew your truck was just over those dunes...

Default Video

Just saw the video and can't stop laughing. Better watch out Sam, Carrie will be off to Hollywood with her great videography talents!!!!!! She just needs better subject matter . . . . . . Now - I can't wait to see all the other interviews!!

Also, I forgot to mention that I got to see Pier Man's new rod. It's a beauty. I was a bit green with envy after seeing it Saturday morning, especially since Oliver has been pestering me to replace my yucky 10' Zebco ProStaff rod and Adventure reel. Oliver says it embarrasses him to see his mother using such shoddy equipment. But you have to know, I won't get rid of it now. That's what I caught my striper on!!!!

I was so tickled to send a photo of my fish to my friend, Debbie. Some of you guys may know her "Uncle" Dennis Murray or her step brother, Craig (Big Bird) Cropper. I've been trying to get Debbie into fishing with me, so she tells them all about what I'm up to whether at the inlet, off the bridge or on A.I. Debbie called them right away to tell them about my fish. Dennis was in the Ake Marine tournament over the weekend and won $400. Anyway, Debbie was impressed with my fish until she saw your fish C.G. She said, "Your fish was great, Nancy - but that other fish was awsome!!!!!
