Swells from Hurricane Bertha began to flood portions of the OSV zone last Friday, and a public use closure went into effect Saturday.
The northernmost problem spot was in front of the plover nest at km 23.5. That nest began hatching Sunday night, and the birds are staying out near the ocean at this time. For that reason, a public use closure will go into effect immediately for the plover brood, and will last until the brood becomes independent of the beach. This generally takes about 3 weeks (give or take a week). The NPS will continue to monitor and re-open as soon as possible.
