Harbor Tackle’s Fishing Report, January 1, 2007
Oh what beautiful weather we have had. And, oh what fish have been caught. A couple of flounder have been caught in the surf at Assateague. Their sizes were 19 inches and 16 inches. It seems that a few more legal stripers are being hooked up. I know of a 28 ¼ inches, a 34 inch, a 35 inch, a 36 inch striper at AI. Jonathan Evans, aged 4, FROM Owings Mills, Maryland caught his first striper Saturday while he was fishing with his dad, Evan Evans. Jonathan’s fish was 24 inches and he caught it on fresh clams. Last week one of my customers said that he had hooked up with 8 keepers from Assateague. There are still big blues are around. Peter Yee of Columbia, Maryland also caught a 34 inch bluefish with fresh bunker. One customer stated that he caught 15 big blues and 4 stripers in 2 days. The Bethany surf is producing a few stripers and big blues. Reported was a 38 inch striper, 39 inch striper, 32 inch blue and a 30 inch blue this weekend in Bethany. Also, reported a 32 inch striper at 3Rs and a 32 inch striper in the Fenwick surf. Fishing in a boat for stripers is getting better. The baits of choice for the surf are mostly Most of my customers are saying look for birds working and fish where they are feeding. One boat caught at least 100 fish in one trip. Half the fish were blues in the 30 inch range and the rest were stripers with only 3 being keepers. Another boat had 60 stripers most in the 27 inch range with 2 legals mixed in. They were fishing at the Ocean City south jetty. Just outside the inlet a 24 inch flounder was hooked up. Still another boat was fishing in front of Assateague in about 32 – 52 feet of water. They caught a 36 inch, a 38 inch and a 29 inch striper. The bait of choice for boaters is eel, black saltys, bucktails and Mann’s Stretch Lures. Rob Jager from Ocean City, Maryland caught a 43 inch striper from a boat just off the beach of Assateague. Sean Kim from Fairfax, Virginia caught a 30 inch blue in the Inlet on the rocks using fresh bunker. The Rt. 50 Bridge and the Inlet are still producing short stripers and shad. A legal striper was reported taken in the bay behind Harbor Island using a black salty. There should be a few tog reports next week as the tautog season opened on January 1, 2007. We will be open as long as bait is available and the fish are still biting. WISHING EVERYONE A PROPEROUS AND HAPPY NEW YEAR! Harbor Tackle has fresh bunker, live eels, live chowder clams, and live black saltys. The picture is of Jonathan Evans with his first striper. He is the son of Evan Evans and grandson of Ron Evans. The fish was 24" and caught on clam. |
