Smile Grandfathers Cont....

Oliver, you were lucky to have someone like that. I fished with my grandfather, but he wasn't the social fisherman. Well, I guess he could be at times, but he was a very quiet, sit and wait kind of guy. I didn't learn much from him, just the basics about top/bottom rigs, squid and minnow spreaders for drifting for flounder. Of course when I fished with him, I was only around 9-11. He had this old magazine from the 70's that had all the different types of fish in the Atlantic and I knew every one of them by heart. I knew what water temps they liked, where you could find them (which part of the coast) and what they fed on. I wish I still had that book. I used to sit on his couch and tie different knots and rigs (my own little inventions and some out of the book) waiting for him to decide it was time to pack up the truck and head to the beach. I remember waiting and waiting... I couldn't understand why we had to wait during a perfectly good morning just because of some stupid tide schedule. He knew better...

He used to catch the big drum like we do now when he was younger (40's), but quit some time ago, so I never got to see how he did it. I'll see if I can scan some old pictures and put them on here.

About two years ago, after my grandfather had passed away, Dad and I both caught a bucket full of fish including a nice striper, and some large croakers. Excellent day of fishing and on the way home, we both wanted to stop and show my Gramps how many fish we had caught. We both knew that if he were alive, he would have said, "My, my... Look at those fish". And he would have this very impressive look on his face no matter what fish we would bring him in the past. Nobody loved fishing like him...

Until I re-found my obsession 16 years later.:glasses10:

I miss all three of them very much, I just hope the lakes in Heaven are big enought for all the Fallen fisherman to "Catch Something Big"

Never knew either of my Grandfathers one passed before I was born the other when I was 3. None of the males in my family or my father's brothers were into the outdoor sports. Not that there was a lot of places in the Bronx to fish. It was a friend's father that intrduced me to saltwater fishing. In high school another friend and his dad introduced me to hunting. I'm still the only one in the family that is into the outdoor sports the rest are spectators. Both the fishing and hunting spirit renewed when I married and moved to NJ. I owe most of my fishing knowledge to a brother-in-law, couple of coworkers and fishing boards like this one. I have to admitt I'd rather Hunt than fish. Maybe because I'm more successful hunting. :icon_rendeer:
