LIVE !!....FISH DISASTER AT CAPE POINT!

I know this isn't the kind of report you guys like to see but today at Cape Point there were some commercial fishermen from Wanchese that decided to net the north beach back from the Point. They continued to work their way towards the Point & when I got there they were inside the 1/2 mile limit with 25 BIG Drum floating dead in the water with only 5 stripers on the beach. Then a rope broke on one of the nets and it drifted to the shoals this side of the Point. The commercial guys all disappeared while the net drifted so some phone calls were made to NCDIF. The netters returned just a few minutes before the officer made it to the Point & sent a boat out after the net after it had drifted for almost 2 hours. The site was horrible when the net was pulled in with 100 more BIG drum (no puppies were seen) up to 50" with the fattest guts you have ever seen. There were also at least 100 BIG Stripers according to the officer. Some of the locals "assisted" the netters by cutting out the drum and getting them back in the water. Some were seen floating back in dead just before dark so no telling how many would make it after being in the net for so long. There didn't seem to be much life left in them or the stripers. The marine officer said no violation would be issued since the rope broke even though they were within the 1/2 mile limit before he got there. The birds had been working out of reach all morning & were still working at dark. At least we know the stripers & drum are here (or were) on this day although I only heard of a couple of stripers caught by surf anglers. Such is life on Hatteras Island. There were a lot of unhappy people out there this evening.
