Ok, so going down to kiptopeke this weekend I'm debating which rods to take with me. I have my 7' MH Casting rod that I built with my Tica Caimen 150 on it....spooled with 50 or 65 lb power pro and I have a MH 6' Ugly Stick with a Diawa Millionaire 100 on it spooled up with 50 lb Power Pro. Do you think these two are good enough to tackle a big cobia, red or black drum? I could always cart one of my sharking rods with me and use it, although I'm thinking that may be a little over kill.

I am a victim of overkill, just ask anyone that has seen the back of my truck! Even Sunday on the canal, I took my 8' with 30# in the yak. Duh, overkill, didn't even use it.

I would gesture to say that your first two mentioned setups will do just fine. A 6-7' pole with a good backbone and something along the lines of a Penn 750 (med-heavy) loaded with 30# braid will do anything you need it to do. Don't overload in the yak, it's a real pain in the keester.
Make darned sure you take a lighter pole (6' light-medium) with you too!!!

Remember, everything can sink or get lost.....
Tie it down. Put the tackle in a bucket and keep the lid on it.

And no whitewater-style launches!!!! LOL!

either if those is fine but it is nice to have a rod long enough to reach around the nose of the yak if you get a runner. Big fish will just pull you, you can land just about anything that swims on medium gear from a yak because of that reason.

oh yeah, I'm gonna take my medium action spinning reel too for throwing metal or other lures and dragging a bottom rig around I have lanyards or bungee cords for everything and I only take limited tackle (exactly what I'll need) with me.
