Rog,

you should be able to practice for now using the spool tension knob and a lot of patience. Tighten it until you get a controlled drop of your weight from the tip when you take you thumb off the spool. You'll want a slow fall to start and then you can back it off until you get too much fluff. That'll get you started at least.

If you can't stand it...

Coop emailed me these when I asked about how he magged the avet before. This is his setup before the knobby.

I went directly to the knobby because of the amount of time it would take in fixing blowups when testing, with the knobby you can brake it all the way and back off as needed without taking it apart and adding magnets etc. If you have this same reel at least you have a starting point. I think he epoxied a piece of sheet metal to the housing for the magnets to stick to.

Roger you can cast that with the lever drag/knob tightening but all you really are doing is adjusting the drag. I really don't think its very practical in fishing situations. I would go straight to a knobby mag and not even mess with the fixed mags. It takes about the same amount of time. Let me know when your ready, and I can give you a hand. That small size throws you off, but like I have said before, same width spool as a 525 except it's taller...more line. SWEET Reel,,,100% quality!

Coop, How much room is there between the magnet and the spool, and what size of magnet did you use. Stan

Stan, had to remeasure but it's tad more than 1/8". I use 2 magnets (2 piggy backed) 1/4" x 1/16". Here is a pic when set at slow.

Roger, try using a piece of galvanized sheet metal and then the magnet. How thick are your magnets?

Dixie, you build that?,,,very, very nice. I am going to build a 1569 for myself with a wooden handle. I hope it looks good when done.
