Default Wadda you think of this idea

I read Ben's post about how he caught his 48" drum and had an idea that I may try out this weekend. It's really a sharkin idea, and since there seem to be some left I will give it a go. But it as we have seen it will work for gamefish.

My idea is to take a large j-hook 12/0 or bigger and tie onto the eye a small kingfish hook. Bait the small hook up with fishbites, use a 10 ounce sinker and let it fly. My thinking is maybe I could get a kingfish, croaker, whatever to eat the fishbites and get hooked. Bingo! Now I have live bait out there waiting for sharky to come along. Maybe use a piece of bunker and get a bluefish on there too.

The advantage of this setup would be I could cast it much further than I can cast a weight/big bait rig. Also it is possible that if it works the shark will no swallow the larger j-hook. Maybe just hook it on the outside of the mouth .

Maybe a way for us that are not yakin to get a bigger bait out further in the water.

Anyone think this could work? I may throw out one rod at night this weekend and try it out.

Sounds similar to snagging live bunker for stripers...

I like it, only danger being the heartbreak of a run and the fish missing the big hook. I'm yakking live baits out on my next trip, this could work great at night when I'm too chicken to go out. Thanks for sharing!

Make sure that your connection to the small hook holds up, nothing saying that you can't hook a drum on a size 6 hook. They will likely inhale the live bait too so a 12/0 J may not be best for releasing fish.

Great idea, let us know.

Wednesday looks SWEET, <10mph SE wind

That constant tugging on my line would drive me crazy by not reeling it in to see what was on the end of my line.

No worries on that, the bait will just be letting you know it's still there swimming. You'll know when you've found what you are looking for =).

I'm thinking you should go for a small circle hook so the bait fish can't get free once it's hooked.
