Default Drum Rig

Ok, I'm going to spend the next week making up all my tackle for the Tourney coming up. I was thinking of Snelling 6/0 Mustad Circles with 60# or 80# Seaguar Flouro. Do you think the 6/0 is big enough? How long should my leader be off the hook? I've snelled them up short (4-5") and I've snelled them long (4-5'). for casting and effectiveness what would you recommend.

distance distance distance distance distance

1.5"-3" I'm not tossing 10/0's because they are clunky but if heads are what you are throwing then you need some beef to keep them on the hook so follow coop's lead.

I dont know if all reds are leader shy or not, but this one wasnt. Caught on steel leader, and 150# plus mono.... he was shark fishing in late august/early september.... A Whole bluefish was the bait, I believe....

I don't think that matters...mono/flouro they'll basically be picking the bait right up off your swivel and sinker/FF.

Yep,,,I really don't use flouro because it's invisible but for the fact that it's more abrasion resistent.

WOW!!! I Hadn't seen that thread before....impressive. Hopefully next Friday will get me my first - albeit a floridian red - are they smaller down there? (thinking they probably are not the big migratory reds...)

The reds I caught in Daytona were comparable to schoolie stripers up here. Not near as big as the pics of drum i have seen taken in OBX or AI during the spring and fall runs. But they do get big way down south too. Check out some of those Texas reds caught on coastalfishingtexas.com or extremecoast.com. ...looks like alot of fun. Good luck down there...

Not all drum are caught with big hooks. The one pictured below was caught on a #2/0 Mutu Circle during the VA beach surf tournament. But I would have to agree that the majority or big fish I’ve caught are on 7/0 hooks or bigger. Look close at the second picture there's a little float on it with about a 2 foot leader. I was not targeting drum with this rig . I learned to fish from an old timer who always preached you can catch big fish on a little hook but you can’t catch small fish on a big hook.

I used this rig as a model, then again I've never caught a big red drum...

I use that rig setup for everything, I just change the line and hook size to target specific critters.
