Ok, got started last night, respooled 2 reels with 20# Berkley Trilene Big Game and 40# shockleader on a total of about 10 reels. I have one reel that is still at my parent's house that needs a shock leader. I should be out tonight to pick up my flouro leader and hooks so I can make up my rigs. I will be all set before you know it. Oh, got a melting pot, I'm going to attempt to make my own weights too. I may try it like we did in hawaii. use wet sand around a store bought sinker, remove the sinker and bingo, there's a mold the perfect size......

LOL, well I am supplying rods for at least 3 people....Unfortunately we have one vehicle and 6 people at the campsite. So, we're going to be crowded where ever we go......We're going out to fish, drink beer and celebrate my 35th birthday, so no matter what its gonna be a good time.

I will only be out ther the 16-17th then again the night of the 21st, but if you look in the Join Me, you'll see that my dad will be out there all by himself and may need a little kick in the rear to get him out on the beach fishing.....

Thumbs down

please be extremely careful when pouring hot lead into wet sand...
lead and moisture do not like each other ...
i know someone who has the scars to prove it ...
and yea i know ..
" i've done it before and had no problems ...."
yup , but there is always the first time there is a problem , hot lead poured into wet sand can 'explode ' back on ya ..

I would think one of those aprons might be in order as well.... there are other places I would not want hot lead splashing

Ok, so I started on making my weights last night. Dad had a really fine playground sand 6 bags worth, that he'd dumped in his backyard. I filled an old bucket and patted it down. Heated up the melting pot and started pouring. I used brass barrel swivels as the eye and made up 6, 8, 10 and 12oz weights. I figured out that my melting pot holds approx 20oz of lead. Since my sand was only damp and not wet, I didn't have any issues with hot lead spashing back up. The weights are by no means smooth, so that is my only concern, they are the texture of sand (I'd forgotten about that part) so line rubbing against the weight could cause an issue. I guess thats what I'm prefishing this weekend so I can work all that stuff out. All in all a cheap (free old tire weights and 0.79 package of 12 #2 or #1 Brass barrel swivels) way to make your weights. I'm considering trying to use my dremel tool to make some molds out of wood, but not quite sure how well that will work.....

Did you try the bondo trick yet ?

I am considering it and just wondering how it worked out for you.
