Default Big Score! Now I am ready...

Had an early birthday party yesterday and scored a 12' tica for 8'n bait and Shimano Torium 20 holds 20/420!!!. Heading to BPS tonight to pick up an OM Cape Point bomber, an upgrade over my casting rig with an OA 12 for 8'n bait, and probably another Torium 20 to pair with the OM 12. If I can find something a little lighter for the tica I will get that if the pricing is attractive. I asked for BPS gift cards so I could combine them and get big expensive stuff...it worked I got about $400 to go in with tonight! Very lucky boy!

Yeah I'm very lucky, I couldn't believe it. I think they were so excited that I actually asked for something specific. This year they pryed until I finally told them what would be perfect. Man am I happy!

I'm a little nervous on the torium, I don't know how well/easy it will toss, but it doubles nicely as a light trolling rig or for boat bottom fishing. One reel that you can use for the surf and boat fishing, can't beat it IMO.

I have everything set up and I'm taking them out to the football field at lunch for a toss off, I'll post the results after that with the obligatory rod/reel porn shots of my rigs.

I have a suspicion that the spinning rig/rigs will win today just because I haven't thrown the toriums. Hoping to go through both sets of uprights and crack 400 ft on my first time out. I'm only throwing stand alone 8's so I shouldn't have too much wind resistance.

I ended up with 2 - 12' cape points with the funky reel seat because they didn't have the regular OM in XH. I only have questions about it on the spinner, my conventional reels bolt on anyway. Dropped $605 at BPS, even the cash register guy was impressed. I have to say the TICA feels better and is lighter, but its all about how far it can bomb it. I know the OM Cape point spinner will out throw them all for now, I have no reservations about putting all 220 into it, which makes it really fun for me. Slight overkill for kingfish however.

I'll reflect what you said about the feel of the Taco rods.
Let us know what you get on the toss...
Can ya toss the Taco and get a measurement too?

The TACO and the OM both have identical reels, I'm going to throw all 4 rods that I have set up now. I'm just chucking the spinner for fun to see how far it will go, the rest of the time will be spent on the TICA and the OM. I'll be practicing all week at lunch so I'm ready to really fire them this weekend. I should have a decent comparison today, my gut tells me the TICA will go farther until I'm used to throwing such a stiff rod, then the OM will go farther once I'm comfortable loading it.

Default RESULTS

1 90 yard cast with tica = no fingerprint on thumb...damn did that hurt. I forgot my glove and decided to try it anyway. I have a nice burn on my thumb to show for it. So like I said above...the tica won the cast off until tonight.

On a better note, my OM CO SPINNING rod threw great once I got the timing down, several in the 100-110 range and a 118 out of 8 casts or so. I'll hit 400 ft end of week without bait.

Check out these PDF's if you are interested in launching. I used them all and the best for me is the off the ground so far, I don't know how practical it will be with bait but I'll give it a shot.

Default More Results

Had the toss off last night, TICA had the early lead with a 120 yard bomb vs the 80 I was getting with the OMCP. Once I was able to consistently load the OM I was tossing past the TICA. TICA was easier to load and more consistent. It feels like 8oz is all I'd really be confortable with on the TICA, I could throw 12 n bait with the OM and be comfortable but would want an 80lb shock at least. I haven't found a limit on that rod yet. I'm pretty sure a 110 yd cast will get you to the bar or over it at AI.

On a side note, as I got cocky I had a backlash of biblical proportions on my TICA, I think it is because it is a little more whippy then the OM so the pull of line off the reel isn't as smooth. I think it being whippy also is what makes me toss it higher then the OM. I bet it will be a dream this weekend with 5 n' head though. I will have to throw 8 on the OM just to load it but if it launches like yesterday I won't mind.

The spinner is still my favorite for now because it's carefree, I can lay into it all I want and just heave away. Best $150 I've spent so far, I can say if I knew it would throw this well I would have gotten 2 more and save $100 a piece on the reels and not worry about backlash. Sure you can throw farther with conv but not as consistently.

You are right on about heavy weight on the OM. I just started using one and I don't even think of throwing it unless I have 6 ounces of lead and a BIG piece of meat.

I can't wait for the fall run!!

I can throw 6 ounces and a big head OR one of those smaller bunkers whole.

I can't throw it as far as I'd like to right now...but while I am still working on it those rockfish come in very close quite often.

Yeah, make sure you have one....
If not, get one and they can take purchases made within the last 30 days and add them to the rewards card. Got to give the reciept to a cashier or other rep to put the points on.

It's worth it....
