Default help with penn reels

i have just received 2 penn reels as a gift if anyone has any experience or opinion regarding the reels i would appreciate it. also any compatiable rod and line suggestions the reels are an applause 4000 and a 550ssg

I have always liked penn reels. I have two myself and have never had a problem with them. (besides the one I had stolen from me) :(

what do you plan on fishing for? how do you plan on using the reel?

what kind is the 4000? never heard of an applause

The recommended line for the CL4000 is 200 yards of 10 lb test. If you have the PGV it lists 280/12. You can bump that either direction a little bit. Just need to remember that the bail won't handle big stuff too often without wearing out. Also, remember that the higher line strength you use, the less you will be able to put on it.

The 550ssg is a new one, looks nice!
The 550 is 275/12. Again, same limitations/variances as above....

These are fine for tossing close in to whatever you can grab.
I'd match them up with an 7' - 8' light-medium rod.

the 550ssg replaced the 5500ss, you can use 17 on it with no problems. ive got mine on a 7' st croix PS70HF, works pretty well with 17lb ironsilk

my son and i are pier jetty and surf guys are preferred targets are blues and stripers we fish predominantly OC AI and CI my son swears by the gotcha and i toss hopkins and floating live lines just to give you an idea what the reels will be used for and thanks for the info i intend on trying to find a 7'footer for the 550 the applause may not be in full production i am going to have to contact the person who gave it to me.

looks like a nice reel, a tad smalelr than the 550ssg, but should work fine

oh yea!!! thats it, talk about smooth action that bail is sooo! fast. my family and i will be staying in Dewey beach for a week in august and i can't wait to put these reels to the test.I wonder if there are any austrailian fishing forums where an aussie could give me an account of that applause just outta curiosity.But thank you for the info it's been driving me crazy .Great forum and tight lines to you.

Honestly, I (but its my dad's I just steal it when I go fishing) have a PENN 9500SS that my dad barely maintains and its ROCK SOLID...never had any problems with it and its oh, probably 7-8 years old...
