Of Shark Sighting

Rehoboth Beach Patrol cleared the waters on Sunday after reports of sharks in the water. Officials say it could have been a sand shark, a skate or a ray.

Captain Kent Buckson says they get sightings at least a couple of times a summer.

"We're going to be proactive and protect the public and pull them out for an extended period of time until we feel confident enough that whatever it was, sharks, skates or rays have moved on," Buckson said.

Buckson says if you see any kind of marine life in the water to remain calm and tell a lifeguard.

Chief Brody spotted the brute crusing off the outer breaker searching for tender young female college swimmers. Quint was last scene in Lewes at Irish Eyes telling stories about the Indianapolis.

I have seen so many cow nose rays in the surf the past few weeks. I'm sure that's what it was. Anytime anyone sees something in the surf, they think, "SHARK!"...

If people only knew how many were actually in the surf I don't think 3/4 of them would venture into the water. Sharks are just something you have to live with when swimming in the ocean.

Yeah - cause marine life is such an abberation - you shouldn't expect to see anything living in the ocean?????? Better go tell the lifegaurd that there's something living in the water so we can send someone to "replenish" the beach, dump some sewage, or spill some chemicals - that way we can be sure there is no living creature in our little personal playground...... OYYYY...somehow that statement struck a nerve for me.... kinda like the people that go camping and complain that there are bears around....never want anyone to be hurt, but don't act surprise when you find nature in nature...

Yeah my wife will never go in the water again, she saw me yank one shark out and that was it for her.

I agree with trowpa. We invade THEIR living space and people have the nerve to complain. I say - the bears, fish and bugs were there before you showed up. Don't like it? Then stay on the boardwalk or your sterile mall. You have to take the +/- of any adventure.

I was a couple miles offshore yesterday, and never had seen so many skates on the surface, or just under...could have very well been what they saw...big schools of mullet and dolphin everywhere, too...nearshore waters were very alive yesterday.

many years ago while when I was stationed at Ft. Macon, NC (which is just north of Atlantic Beach). they were having there first annual Surffing Tornament and a TV news crew was flying up along the beach in a copter, when someone on the news crew noticed that just about behind every surffer there was a dark spot thought tobe sharks well they were sharks, and they we're just about to shut-down the whole tourney because of sharks in the water wth surffers, talk about over reacting

a guy at works nephew used to kite surf at ai.he said there are so many sharks in the water down there you wouldnt believe it.

I have been surfing and seen them many times,,,around here, 99.9% are just not the aggressive variety of sharks.

I'm probably wrong, but I think the only one people really need to worry about around here is the Bull Shark.

Jeff, are Bulls found this far north guess it all depends on water temp and a food source
