Coast Guard: Research Boat Crew Member Declared Dead

REHOBOTH BEACH, Del. (WBOC/AP) - The Coast Guard confirms that one of two crew members taken from a research vessel floundering off the Delaware coast after a storm that lashed the Atlantic coast has been declared dead.

Petty Officer Nick Cangemi said the crewman had no heartbeat or respiration when a Coast Guard rescue helicopter responded late Monday morning to a distress call from the Russell W. Peterson, about 14 miles off Rehoboth Beach.
Cangemi said both crew members were taken to Peninsula Regional Medical Center in Salisbury, Maryland., where hospital personnel later declared one dead.
Roger Follebout Jr., a spokesman for PRMC, said that without a name, the hospital could not confirm the condition of any patient brought there.

The vessel, which was christened just six weeks ago in Wilmington, is owned by Aqua Survey Inc. of Flemington, N.J., which had no immediate comment.

Bluewater Wind LLC, which is trying to win state approval to build an offshore wind farm that would supply electricity to Delmarva Power, was using the vessel to study migratory bird routes in the Atlantic Ocean off Rehoboth Beach.

Peter D. Mandelstam, president of Bluewater Wind, LLC, issued a statement on Monday's tragedy that read in part, "Everyone here at Bluewater Wind is deeply saddened by this tragic occurrence. Our thoughts and prayers are with the captain's family, friends and loved ones."

Nope not me..... We all blame NOAA for this tragedy. their reports called for 25 to 30 knot winds by midnight and when we passed the lighthouse headed into the harbor of refuge at 10 it was already blowing a steady 40.... by midnight we were recording gust of 70 plus.... How can you be THAT WRONG????? With better reports the Captain of that vessel would have been inside the wall long before it got bad.... We constantly see NOAA reports that are so far off the mark it's ridiculous. They are the most inept group of morons on the planet. Something has to be done about these idiots before they get more people killed.
