Vermont DNR found, in the northern reaches of the Connecticut River near Bloomfield, VT a bad weed known as Didymo" or "rock snot". This is an invasive and expanding freshwater microscopic alga. This alga has massive blooms that form thick mats of material, much like cotton, smothering water plants, insects and mollusks. This non-native invader destroys miles of American river and stream fish habitats.
Anglers, kayakers, canoeists, boaters and jet skiers are all responsible for unknowingly spreading Didymo. To avoid spreading this invasive enemy it is important to remove all clumps of algae in the trash at the affected site. Avoid washing any algae down drains. After soaking and scrubbing everything in hot bleach water, or soapy water with detergent allow the items to dry and wait 48 hours before using them in any other waterway.
