Question Aux water tank question

I'm looking to add a water tank, maybe two small ones to balance things, to the top of my camper......

What size tanks are you guys carrying?

How are you strapping them down?

Thanks,

Dennis

I carry a 35 gallon tank for aux water. The strapping down part is a little tricky. You are going to need a 2x6 and 4 eye bolts with nuts etc. as well as 2 ratchet straps. Cut the 2x6 long enough so that when you set the tank on top of the boards that you still have a good 8 or 10 inches from the base of the tank to the end of the board on both sides. Next you are going to need a tube of QUAD and you are going to want to glue the boards with eye bolts in them ( make sure that the bolts are recessed in the board with a paddle bit ) and glue the boards where you want them on the top of your camper. Then place the tank on the boards and fill with water and DON'T move the camper for a day or two. Had some experience with that and it wasn't really all that hot. Once it is dry ratchet it down and off you go. Haven't had any problems to date. Seems to work well. I don't know if your camper has a luggage rack because that would be an even better option.

What kind of camper do you have and what does your rack look like? Is it away from the back of the camper? I don't know if you have a slide either but if you do you want to try and mount this on the opposite side for balancing issues. You also may want to start hitting the Tractor Supply places in the area and make sure that the water discharge is on the side not the bottom, been there and done that one too they get a little difficult to find sometimes.

I didn't think of the discharge....another member here hooked me up with the link .....I may go in person to actually look at them, there's a store up about 40min from me ......

I'll shoot some pics of the roof and rack etc.....

Also do you climb up to fill it or do you have a fill hose rigged somehow?....I'm not a small guy...infact I don't use the TC ladder because it wouldn't stand a chance....may have to make the wife fill it LOL......

Thumbs up

denny
with a 'rack' like that ; i would mount the tank on either a piece of plywood or a couple of 2x6 or 2x8's . just to spread out the weight .
then i'd use motorcycle tie down ratchet straps over the top of the tank .

I was thinking something like that may work derf.....was hoping someone would back me up on the idea....incase I do raise enough to make the trade in future, we may not mind a tank fixed to the roof but it may not be for nonbeach goers......

I could put a pad under the boards too so it doesn't rub it when bouncing down the beach....or was that your idea when we were pming?....either way it should work

It's a rubber roof so I figure I'll put a mat (or similar) under the boards....what do you think?

You are going to have to mount it the first way that I suggested. I have the same type of rack on the top of mine. I mounted mine as far forward without upsetting the balance of the camper when it isn't on the truck. I will say that I went from a 65 gallon tank to a 35 gallon tank and there aren't any scratches under the boards and believe me that was one hell of an accomplishment to get the boards to move in the first place, don't want to do that again. On the fill I climb up on top and fill mine but I also take mine off every year. If you know how or have a buddy that is a plumber you can pipe it in with pvc and put a ball valve on it with a hose connection so that you can hook up your hose to fill your tank on your camper inside or the one on the roof. Let me know how it works or if you have any other questions.

I don't want to mount anything permanent.....I may be trading this in next Spring.....

I talked to a guy that uses one of these on his roof:

http://www.campingworld.com/browse/s...=1605&src=SRQB

I'm gonna have to think some more (danger danger)......

Don't take this the wrong way because I really appreciate your help Scott and Derf.....but where the heck is everybody?.....I've seen tons campers on the beach, seen pics of loads of campers on the amsa web-site, but not much going on here

Keep us updated with a materials and technique list so if someone else wants to do the same it will all be right here.
