Bruce, Ron, Tony and I planned a Memorial Day gaffer trip in Hatteras a few weeks back, we were hoping the weather would cooperate and it did. We arrived around 5:00 pm Saturday evening and set up camp right next to Teach’s Lair Marina. We had made arrangements to park Tony’s RV there with Teach’s owner Roy. I want to add Roy and the entire staff of Teach’s Lair were fantastic and we are looking forward to fishing there again soon. Thanks Roy and staff!!!
First day of fishing started out with zero wind and a beautiful ride out to an area just north of the Rockpile. The wind picked up as forecasted out of the NE and made the gulf stream quite snotty. We stuck it out till 2:00 pm and managed to pick up two nice gaffers. We headed back to Teach’s, cooked out and got everything set up for the next day. Monday came, we headed out to the 280 rocks and decided to head east till we found a second temp break, we found it and were promptly rewarded with three nice gaffers. Things slowed a bit and we decided to had inshore we got to the 218 line in 17 fathoms and we mark a Striper season size bait ball so I put the auto pilot on “cloverleaf” and worked the area over and this made our day double and triple mahi hook-ups and a few FAs mixed in made for great fun. Headed back through increasing SE winds at 3:30 and headed home.
Not quite the day we had last Memorial Day but certainly fun. Thanks to Roy at Teach’s Lair for letting us stay the weekend. A big thanks to Ron, Tony and Bruce for making the trip possible!!!
