I am certainly no pro at reading the water, as a matter of fact that is my weakest skill by far. When you can read the waves, look for other things such as an area where there is a lot of debris or shells washed up. Look at the shoreline structure and sometimes you can see where the beach points out or has a gully in it. I have also heard on
AI you can read the dune structure to get some idea of the historical trends of the water in front of the dunes. I am not quite sure what to look for but I am starting to take mental notes of how the dunes are when I do find the rare rip or big hole. Maybe one of these days i'll figure out the correlation or figure out that I am just batcrap crazy in thinking you can read the dunes.
