I have the 309 on a 6' Penn Slammer, not exactly a tossin' stick. Just decided to toss right behind the surf break for Charks.
It felt very heavy, but of course the pole was short and the reel is heavy, duh! I tried anyway.....
It took me 4 tries to get it about 50 feet. I didn't have any blow ups but it didn't go in the water the first 2 times, landed on the beach to my left. Yeah, it needs to be magged, no doubt....
